Victor Osimhen has become the first Nigerian player to score 10 goals in the UEFA Champions League.
The 26-year-old striker reached this record after scoring the only goal in Galatasaray’s 1-0 win against Liverpool at RAMS Park on Tuesday.
He scored from the penalty spot, sending the ball down the middle while Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker dived the other way. The penalty came after Dominic Szoboszlai fouled Barış Alper Yılmaz with a hit to the face.
With this goal, Osimhen passed Obafemi Martins to become Nigeria’s top scorer in the Champions League (not counting qualifying games). He also became the first Nigerian to score for three different clubs in the competition — Lille, Napoli, and now Galatasaray.
Although Osimhen had chances to score more, Alisson denied him. He was later replaced by Mauro Icardi in the 72nd minute.
Galatasaray held on to beat the English Premier League champions in a surprising result.
This achievement further proves Osimhen’s status as one of Africa’s best strikers today.
